Muriel Alves: Learning by Doing — From Experience to Leadership

In 2023, a three-week experience marked the beginning of a journey that would become a decision to continue. Muriel Alves arrived in Guinea-Bissau as part of her training in Education, within a learning model centred on practical experience and collective living.

During this first stay, her contact with the DNS-Bachil Teacher Training College proved to be decisive. Through activities with students, cultural moments, and shared experiences, a connection was formed that went beyond the duration of the visit.

“I fell in love with the school and the country — and I promised myself I would return.”

That promise was fulfilled in 2025, when she returned to Guinea-Bissau to undertake her international placement. Fully integrated into the daily life of the school, Muriel took on an active role in the functioning and educational dynamics of DNS-Bachil, in an environment where learning takes place through action.

Throughout this experience, she was involved in different areas, from teaching English to coordinating the communications team, as well as supporting students and participating in pedagogical and organisational activities. This experience enabled her to develop essential skills within a real context of work and responsibility.

“This experience strengthened my teaching, leadership and project management skills.”
