In 2023, a three-week experience marked the beginning of a journey that would become a decision to continue. Muriel Alves arrived in Guinea-Bissau as part of her training in Education, within a learning model centred on practical experience and collective living.
During this first stay, her contact with the DNS-Bachil Teacher Training College proved to be decisive. Through activities with students, cultural moments, and shared experiences, a connection was formed that went beyond the duration of the visit.

“I fell in love with the school and the country — and I promised myself I would return.”
That promise was fulfilled in 2025, when she returned to Guinea-Bissau to undertake her international placement. Fully integrated into the daily life of the school, Muriel took on an active role in the functioning and educational dynamics of DNS-Bachil, in an environment where learning takes place through action.
Throughout this experience, she was involved in different areas, from teaching English to coordinating the communications team, as well as supporting students and participating in pedagogical and organisational activities. This experience enabled her to develop essential skills within a real context of work and responsibility.
“This experience strengthened my teaching, leadership and project management skills.”
The pedagogical model of DNS-Bachil, based on the principle of “learning by doing”, stands out in this journey as a central factor of transformation. Learning is not limited to the acquisition of theoretical knowledge but is realised through practice, interaction, and direct engagement with the community.
“Learning by doing transforms both the teacher and the student.”
Muriel Alves’s testimony reflects the impact of practical training in a real-world context, demonstrating how immersive experiences contribute to the development of professional and human skills with lasting effects. At the same time, it highlights the role of education as a driver of individual and collective transformation.
