European Union in Guinea-Bissau Concludes 6-Year Cycle of the Ianda Guiné Lus ku Iagu Action, with Transformative Impact on the Population

After six years of crucial interventions in the energy, water, and sanitation sectors through the Ianda Guiné Lus ku Iagu Action, the European Union has concluded a cycle of significant impact in the regions of Bafatá, Bolama, Oio, and Tombali.

The closing ceremony of the Lus ku Iagu Action took place on May 26 at the Portuguese Cultural Center, bringing together representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Energy and Industry, the European Union Delegation, the Portuguese Embassy, as well as various partners and beneficiaries who witnessed the results achieved.

During the event, the outcomes of infrastructure improvements and capacity-building were presented, with highlights including the rehabilitation of water supply systems, installation of a photovoltaic solar power plant, and the construction of more than 5,500 latrines, promoting dignified access to sanitation for thousands of families.

Some of the results presented at the event include:

1. Water Component

Construction of multi-location Water Supply Systems (WSS) for the rural communities of Encheia and Sansambato.

Rehabilitation of the WSS in Mansoa and integration of a Water Treatment Plant (WTP), with distribution through 31 public fountains.

Rehabilitation of over 150 manual pumps by 35 trained technicians.

Establishment of a spare parts store.

92 public fountain operators trained.

2. Energy Component

Installation of the Bolama Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant.

Installation of a rural electrification system in Sansambato.

3. Sanitation Component

Construction of 5,545 latrines and implementation of the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) methodology, with 242 communities declared PACOMA (free from open defecation).

1,096 sanitation activist technicians trained in basic sanitation. Before closing the event, the external evaluation team for the Action presented reflections on lessons learned, challenges, and future opportunities. To conclude the event on a high note, the documentary "No lumia no amanha" was launched, which visually captures the project's journey.

Over the past six years, the European Union, through TESE and local partners such as ASPAAB and ADPP-GB, has driven real improvements in the quality of life of communities, leaving behind a legacy of progress and innovation. It is now up to national and local actors to preserve and value this legacy, ensuring that the benefits continue and reach even more people.
